Beyond real estate web design: why Clozma fully funded and built the Dr. Choksey Albinism Foundation website

We design websites for real estate agents. We also built one for a charity that supports people with albinism in Kenya, and covered the full cost ourselves. Here is why.

Giving Back

What is the Dr. Choksey Albinism Foundation and who funded its website?

The Dr. Choksey Albinism Foundation is a charitable trust registered in Kenya that works to improve the lives of children and adults with albinism through eye care, education support, awareness, and community empowerment. Its website, drchokseyalbinismfoundation.com, was designed, built, and fully funded by Clozma as a pro bono project. The foundation paid nothing for the design, the build, the domain setup, or the ongoing maintenance.

Clozma exists to build design-first websites for real estate agents, teams, and brokerages. That is our business and we are proud of it. We also think an agency should be judged by more than the revenue it brings in, and that the same skills can do real good when they are pointed at something outside the market.

The foundation's website is the clearest example we have. We designed and built it in-house, and we covered the whole cost.

Why this cause

Albinism brings significant visual impairment and a much higher risk of skin cancer, and in many places it also brings stigma. Across parts of Africa, myths about the condition still put children in real danger. A child who cannot see the board, cannot stay out in the sun, and is treated as an outsider has very little chance of finishing school without help.

When the idea of a new website came to us, we decided not to treat it as a client project. We sponsored it outright. Covering the design, the build, the domain setup, and the upkeep means the foundation spends nothing on web development, and the money it raises can go to its programs.

A charity should never have to choose between a working website and a child's pair of glasses.

What the foundation does

The foundation is led by Dr. Prabha Choksey, an ophthalmologist who has practiced in Kenya since 1987. Its motto is Help Ever, Hurt Never, and its work falls into a few clear programs.

  • The Gift of Sight. Free eye examinations and prescription photochromatic glasses, which darken in sunlight, so that children with albinism can read, learn, and be outdoors more comfortably.
  • Wings to Fly. School sponsorships that keep children with albinism in class across Kenya. The name comes from a line the foundation uses often: a child without education is like a bird without wings.
  • Mentorship and workshops. Guidance for students as they grow, and practical sessions for parents and guardians on eye care and sun protection.
  • Advocacy and awareness. Work to replace myths about albinism with facts, in communities, on stage, and at international forums.

The results are concrete. Goldalyn Kakuya Tanga, supported by the foundation since 2015, earned the top score in Kenya's national primary school exam in 2017, ahead of more than 990,000 other candidates. The foundation's education partnership with NCBA Bank has run since 2015, and it is a member of the Global Albinism Alliance.

The same standards, a different purpose

We built the foundation's site the way we build for our real estate clients. Three things mattered most.

  1. 1

The foundation's story, told properly. The site opens with who the foundation is and what it does: its mission and vision, Dr. Choksey's own journey, the honors the work has earned, and the stories of the children it serves, in words, photographs, and video.

  2. 2

Clear paths to information. The site is organized around what a visitor needs: understanding albinism, the foundation's programs in eye care, education support, mentorship, and advocacy, and guidance for parents and guardians.

  3. 3

Easy ways to help. Donating, sponsoring a child, volunteering or mentoring, and partnering with the foundation each have their own clear route, so a visitor who wants to help is never left looking for how.

The site is also built to reach people outside Kenya. Hospitals, schools, companies, and individuals in other countries contact the foundation to fund school fees, send sunscreen and lenses, or mentor a student, and the site gives each of them a clear place to start.

Design with purpose

A home search for a luxury agent and a resource hub for a charity look like very different projects. The principle underneath is the same: a clear, credible site earns trust, and trust is what moves someone to act, whether that means booking a showing or sponsoring a child's education.

We invite our clients, partners, and everyone in our real estate network to see the site and support the foundation's work. Visit the Dr. Choksey Albinism Foundation.
